Frame Materials

Why Materials Matter

When choosing eyewear, it's important to consider the material of the eyeglass frames. Certain materials might better suit your lifestyle or personality. Materials also can affect the weight, style, comfort, quality, and price of your glasses.

Plastic

Plastic is a great material for frames because it comes in a variety of colors, textures, and patterns. The adjustability of plastic eyewear depends on the type of plastic used. Some are easy to adjust with little or no heat, while others are durable, impact-resistant, and great for sports. Some plastics can become brittle or discolored with age, so use caution and make sure you're buying a quality plastic.

Metal

Metal frames are lightweight, strong, and hold their shape well. They also can be made in or coated in various colors. Metal frames often are made of aluminum, cobalt, Monel, nickel silver, phosphor bronze, or trilam. Some people are allergic to certain metals; if this is you, try hypoallergenic options such as titanium or stainless steel.

Titanium

Of all metals, titanium is one of the best frame materials available. It's lightweight, durable, and corrosion-resistant. Titanium also is hypoallergenic—so it's a great choice for people who are allergic to other metals. Titanium is strong, easy to adjust, and comes in an array of colors. Titanium eyeglasses are great for hot, humid environments because of their strength. Titanium eyeglasses are perfect for active lifestyles or those with prescriptions that require thicker lenses.

Stainless Steel

Like titanium, stainless steel is hypoallergenic. Stainless steel is lightweight, strong, and corrosion-resistant. In most cases, stainless steel can be a cheaper alternative to titanium. Stainless steel frames are very durable and easily spring back into shape after an accidental bump. They're easy to adjust, and discoloration is rare.

Multi

Frames that contain multiple materials can combine benefits of the materials you choose. For example, some people choose a mix of metal and plastic because the metal frame offers the comfort of nosepads while the plastic temples give the style a trendy edge.
