If your plan says dilation is included, they usually cannot bypass that by forcing a paid substitute.\n\nFlorida Consumer Protection: Florida law (FS 463.0135) prohibits practices that \"unnecessarily increase the cost of professional services without a corresponding public benefit.\" Forcing a $30–$50 fee because they chose not to staff a doctor could be argued as an unnecessary cost increase.\n\nIf I could give -1 stars I would. This place took 18 months, 3 exams and literally 13 remakes to get my glasses right. And then still didn't really get it right. Absolute Joke. DO NOT SHOP HERE. I was given a prescription that was clearly 5–6 years old, not the new one the doctor had just prescribed. When I returned explaining that I could not see properly and that the prescription on the box was my old one (which I know because I can read and understand prescription details), I was told I was wrong and that they had done nothing incorrectly.\nIt is unbelievable to be argued with about your own vision. Telling a patient they’re wrong when they can’t see and are pointing out a very obvious error is not only unprofessional, it’s negligent.\nTo make matters worse, when I later called to request a copy of my prescription to be emailed or mailed to me, I was told I would have to physically come into the location to get it—despite the fact that this office is over an hour away from my home. This information was completely incorrect. Thankfully, someone from the call center overheard the conversation, stepped in, and sent me my prescription themselves—clearly because the receptionist either did not know what she was doing or simply didn’t want to do her job.\nNo accountability. No effort to correct mistakes. Just attitude and misinformation.\nEven if the doctor is competent, the front desk staff alone makes this place not worth the headache. I was getting contacts, and haven’t popped contacts in since middle school- so 20 years or so. She was patient while I tried them in and got with the doctor again. Then, on the other side, Ruby was great. Patient, helpful and professional. Helped me pick the best options as far as contacts vs glasses, and ended up with both. Helped me pick out frames and types of lenses and upgrades too. He was friendly to everyone who walked in, and stayed professional across the board. I gave myself time to calm down and think about it rather than letting my anger and frustration get the best of my judgement. I have thought about it and yes, I am posting this as you can see.\n\nMy original exam appointment was in Nov 2024 – the people who were there then were fantastic. The lady who helped with my exam was great. I wish I recalled her name. The virtual exam was a bit weird but we got through it. I am a contacts wearer. Haven’t had glasses since 1993. At my appointment after trying on the newest prescription for me for contacts – It was discovered that I probably need bi or trifocals because the change in vision made it impossible to read my phone while wearing the contacts. So I was given a trial pair of the trifocals. I bought a couple boxes online just to try to get used to them since this was my first time with this type of lens at all. I found that I just could not get used to them. Being as I am near-sighted and work from home, I don’t really wear corrective lenses at home. I don’t need them to read my phone or anything within 10ft, and even then it will depend on what size the letters are. When I am going to events or driving somewhere unfamiliar I will usually wear them. So I finally decided it was just better to get glasses because contacts do expire, and it could be weeks between wearing them when I find I will need them, which feels wasteful. My husband got his eyes checked the same time and ordered glasses. The guy at that desk helped him and was nice and super cool.\n\nSo a few weeks ago I went back into Pearle to finally order my first pair of glasses in 30+years. The person at the desk that I would order glasses with was not the same person from back in November. No big deal, or so I thought.\n\nWhen I asked about frameless, the guy said they don’t carry them. I asked about ultralight frames because I get sinus headaches if something sits on the bridge of my nose that is too heavy. The guy was no help, leaving me to try to figure this out on my own. I basically gave up and just picked something that felt light enough. I was still taken aback by how blunt and rude this guy was. I brushed it off as maybe a bad day or something.\n\nCouple weeks go by, I get a message stating my glasses were in. I went in this past Saturday 8/2, since I live in Ocala. None of the places in Ocala that take our insurance have weekend hours so that is the reason we chose Pearle.\n\nI go into the shop and he tried to show me how the trifocal thing works. I was having a bit of a hard time and I said – mostly just thinking out loud – that maybe I didn’t need the bi/trifocal part since I mostly use these for driving and general events like concerts etc. The guy goes off on me saying I wasted his time and that he went through all that with me at the last visit only for me to say I don’t like them. That I am a 44yo woman and should have said something in the beginning. I was so taken aback by this incredibly insulting conversation that I couldn’t even find the words to reply other than stuttering and apologizing. He said that I have 30 days to fix them. Being that I will be out of town from 8/13-8/27, I didn’t have time to do anything about it so I just left. Figuring I would just live with them because I will NEVER return to that store ever. Even if it means now needing to take a PTO day off just for an eye exam just because I refuse to make the effort to drive to Gainesville to be insulted and belittled by someone half my age.
