I noted some issues with my contacts having blurry vision at the start of the exam. The exam was notably fast with an option of “1 or 2” in each eye and that was the end. I was given trial pairs of contacts and sent on my way. After the exam, I was presented a larger than expected bill. I questioned this as I have always had coverage on both at which point I was simply told “your insurance (eyemed) only covered the glasses exam, but not the contacts exam.” I paid that bill and proceeded to order new contacts assuming all was fine. I followed up with eyemed that confirmed I do have coverage on both glasses and contacts exams.\n\nThat afternoon, I went to place an order for prescription safety glasses and noticed that my astigmatism changed eyes. I called Pearle Vision to ask if this was correct where they assured me that it was. I proceeded to place my glasses order. The glasses have since arrived and are unable to be worn due to headaches.\n\nThe following day I put in the trial pair of contacts and had even more pronounced blurry vision than before. I called Pearle Vision the next business day to see if I could cancel my contacts order and intended to ask what to do regarding the prescription. I was immediately told they were with a patient and would call me back, which I agreed to. She then asked my name, then said “you need to wait for the contacts to arrive at your house and then bring them in to return” and hung up before I could ask about resolving the incorrect prescriptions.\n\nAt this point, I scheduled an appointment with a different provider as pearle vision was being unhelpful/unwilling to resolve my issues. My prescription did not match what I was given at Pearle Vision.\n\nI returned to Pearle Vision the following week to return the contacts and asked to be refunded for the exams as both prescriptions are incorrect and were verified at a different practice. The contacts were refunded without question, but I was told I needed to speak with the doctor about the exams (I was told the doctor only works tuesdays and to call back then. Odd, considering I saw the dr on a Saturday.) Despite this, I played by the rules and called back Tuesday. Excuses were given at every opportunity. 1) you should have come back for another exam. At no point was this offered as an option to me on either follow up call or mentioned when I went to the office to return the contacts. Blame was also placed on the second practice as “if they were worth anything they would have told you to come back to Pearle for another exam instead of ripping you off.” The second practice did tell me this, Pearle refuses to acknowledge any fault on their part. 2) “Pearle Vision cannot bill for a contacts exam as this counts towards your contacts benefits. If we did, you would’ve had no coverage on the contacts” but supposedly other private practices can bill for both exams and contacts where you will receive coverage on all three - this information provided from the doctor at pearle. It would have been easy to explain this at the time of the visit. 3) The doctor will take zero responsibility for giving an inadequate exam going as far as telling me to not insult the integrity of his exams/clinic when I brought up how brief the exam was. I was given an option of “1 or 2” in each eye, nothing more. The contacts exam did not include the standard fit exam that has been required by every other provider I have been to. Had this occurred, it is likely the issues with the prescriptions could have been addressed and resolved without issue.\n\nOf note, luxottica owns both eyemed and pearle vision. How can Pearle Vision not bill eyemed for all services rendered but other independent practices can?
