I am very grateful for Dr. Alberts care, knowledge and encouragement throughout the process. That’s how my appointment with Dr. Meg—oops I mean “she-who-can’t-slip-Freud” began.\n\nThe exam room smelled faintly of Vicks VapoRub and a candle called “therapy didn’t work”. At one point, I swear a motivational sign on the wall rolled its own eyes at me.\n\nShe walked in wearing brown dress shoes so depressing that I instinctively whispered “I’m sorry” to them. They weren’t just shoes. They were a cry for help in leather form. They looked like they belonged to someone selling expired printer ink door to door and cries in a beige Corolla on lunch break. Not only did they not match her outfit, I don’t think they matched each other spiritually. You could tell they were the kind of shoes that made a loud squeak every time she tried to assert authority.\n\nThe eye exam itself felt more like a séance. The lights flickered. She muttered something to the machine that sounded like “I’m going down on the prescription…yeah, the prescription!” I think she was trying to flirt with the phoropter and I was stuck in the love triangle. I couldn’t tell if she was adjusting the lenses or trying to open a portal to the shadow realm.\n\nShe kept asking “one or two” —But she wasn’t even pointing at lenses. Just vaguely waving at the air like she was trying to shoo away a ghost or conduct invisible ducks. I started answering randomly like it was multiple choice test for my soul.\n\nShe blinked. I blinked more. At one point, I wasn’t sure who was the patient anymore.\n\nBy the end of the exam, I was questioning everything— my vision, my sanity, and whether I had accidentally walked into an experimental art exhibit titled “What if we just pretended to be Doctors?”\n\nShe then handed me a prescription with the confidence of someone forging it with crayola.
