There was a recent change in ownership. I wasn't even aware Pearles were franchises , but apparently this owner owns multiple herself. It seems they're now out to upsell you more than ever. First there's the new eye health image machine that's not covered by insurance; it's a $30 charge over just dilating your eyes and looking. Sure it's more convenient for everyone, but if that's the case maybe absorb the cost of the machine for that greater efficiency and benefits it offers everyone. Today, the owner who is an eye doctor was doing appointments. My wife who was there for her first appointment, based on my recommendation, insisted like I had a few weeks back, to just do the dilation as part of the covered services. The owner ate the cost of the new machine's service for today because as it turned out, she had some place to be. Before my wife could even finish ordering her glasses the doctor was changed into workout clothes and out the door. That's not the worst and we could have been OK with that until I asked for my wife's PD or pupillary distance. The optometrist told me that I \"got on her that one\" when I was in a few weeks back because that should have been a $10 charge. Sure it's only $10, but that's absolutely outrageous. While it may not be part of the official eye prescription, it is required for the optometrist to take the measurement to make or order glasses. Every optometrist has always just provided that when asked and some retailers actually have PD listed on their script. In this case, like every optometrist, they have the number already, but want $10 more after having scored their large mark-up on glasses. I watched a senior citizen unable to actually order glasses because her glasses with a retail cost of $700 or so we're going to cost her $303 out of pocket and she just didn't have it, but the sales pitch was look how much you're saving. I could guess it was the numerous upsells that I personally experienced. $90 for progressive lens when there is a $0 option that wasn't even offered until I asked about it. My experience has typically been I would get my prescription and glasses with the upselled features and then order from another online retailer where I could get a whole pair of glasses with better lenses for about $60 retail, but this year I went for the $0 no upsells option because I know I'm going to order some new \"goggles\" 4 ME (website hint) and those will likely be my everyday glasses. I'm going to do the same for my wife, but I'll have to measure her PD myself.
